project proposals
MEANTIME provides space to test ideas, for active, critical cultural production and debate rather than for the routine display and consumption of art. The project supports investigation, exploration and enquiry over commercial or market-driven production, and is concerned with enabling and sustaining developments in practice rather than replicating known processes and results.
Artists, artists' groups, collaborators and curators are invited to submit proposals for residencies (up to a month), short projects or events to research/produce and present new work or to curate group projects. In the first instance, contact co-ordinator Sarah B to discuss residency/project/event ideas and to arrange a site visit.
Applicants should show a strong commitment to critical research within their field of interest, locating their practice within a broader perspective of social and cultural environments. Proposals should demonstrate clear intentions for the residency or project in terms of methodology but needn't prescribe an outcome or final piece of work - the project may represent part of an ongoing process.
It is anticipated that artists will consider the potential of each part of the gallery structure as a platform for the production of work (e.g. signage, invites, publications), working with the co-ordinator on communication strategies, and contributing ideas for publicity and engaging audiences. During the residency, artists may initiate discussions, open studios, screenings, etc. that inform, contextualise and extend the project, and if appropriate, produce a written text.
Residencies and projects conclude with an informal or formal public presentation of work, and discussion opportunity - artists should consider inviting critics and/or other artists to facilitate debate. Work may remain in situ for a few days after the residency but is not generally exhibited for an extended time.
Proposals are submitted by email, and should include a concise text/statement and biography, images, timescale and budget. Production bursaries may be available for travel and material expenses, although selected artists are strongly advised to seek funding from other sources to cover further costs such as accommodation.
Following the residency a short report will be required.
